Mumbai, Feb 18: The second wave of corona virus pandemic is sharply spreading all over the state of Maharashtra after a lull of some months. According to doctors, the number of covid-19 cases is increasing in Mumbai from 350 per day to 645 per day within a week.

Similarly, the pandemic is spreading alarmingly in Amravati, Nagpur, Pune and other cities of the state reporting a significant rise in the number of new infections in the recent past.

Maharashtra reported fresh cases of nearly 5000 recorded on Wednesday while 3853 patients were discharged. On 14th Feb there were 4000 new cases reported for the first time in over a month. The test positivity rate has almost doubled in Pune indicating a significant degree of spread in community.

In Nagpur and other Vidarbha districts, the local administration was compelled to take steps to reinforce control measures and close down the educational institutions opened a few days ago. Curfew has been clamped in Buldana, Jalna, Amravati and other districts. The number of fresh cases has once again started exceeding the number of recovered patients in Nagpur and Vidarbha districts. In Amravati, the number of fresh cases has shot up by seven times.

The Chief Minister conducted a videoconference with all the divisional commissioners, district collectors and other officials and directed them to reinforce covid-19 control measures to contain the community spread of the pandemic. He asked the people to religiously and strictly follow the Covid-19 protocol by wearing masks, maintaining social distancing and avoiding crowded places. Failure to follow this will invite sharp punitive action, the Chief Minister had warned.

The seriousness with which chief minister Uddhav Thackeray was insisting upon the citizens to follow the corona virus pandemic protocol indicated to the stark reality that the second wave of Covid-19 has crept into the masses and it is obvious to anyone who goes round the places.

People have become complacent and careless in wearing masks and following the corona protocol. The masses no longer seem to adhere to the rules and regulation imposed in the initial period. People hardly use masks especially in the wedding receptions and other events. Hundreds of people stuffed inside an air-conditioned hall without masks or social distancing, is a certain recipe for disaster. It is no wonder that wedding parties and vacations are acting as super-spreaders as the government has lifted curbs on mass gatherings.

Though the situation is still under control, if people do not pull up their socks and start following proper measures such as wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing and avoiding overcrowded places, we are in for big trouble in the next few weeks in Maharashtra
